Our Story: From Service to Service
Service has always been at the center of our lives.
James dedicated 12 and a half years to the United States Marine Corps as an infantryman, deploying multiple times to Iraq and Afghanistan. He later served as a Senior Drill Instructor, shaping and mentoring the next generation of Marines—instilling discipline, resilience, and purpose in young men preparing to serve something greater than themselves.
But like so many who answer the call to serve, James returned home carrying more than memories.
He came back with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), PTSD, adjustment disorder, and significant physical injuries that would eventually require surgery. The transition from the battlefield to everyday life was not simple, and it was not easy. And while James bore the visible and invisible wounds, our entire family felt the weight of that transition. Much like an infantry squad, we were deeply connected and when one struggled, we all did.
As we navigated this new reality, we began to see something clearly: the system meant to support veterans often falls short.
We encountered gaps in care, long delays in medical treatment, and the overwhelming complexity of navigating the VA system. We met other families facing similar battles, some dealing with homelessness, others struggling to access timely healthcare, and many trying to hold their families together under immense pressure.
One truth became undeniable: most programs focus solely on the veteran, but healing doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens within the family.
When a veteran suffers, the entire household is impacted. Spouses carry unseen burdens. Children absorb stress they don’t fully understand. True restoration requires supporting the family as a whole—just like a unit.
Out of this realization, Set Apart Farms was born.
Grounded in faith and inspired by the call in 1 Peter 1:16—“Be set apart, for I am set apart”—our mission is both simple and deeply personal:
To provide temporary, free housing and assistance to U.S. veterans and their families facing homelessness, and to walk alongside them during medical recovery by connecting them with VA and community resources, all while fostering a healthy, faith-centered lifestyle.
Set Apart Farms is more than a place to stay. It is a place to heal. A place to reset. A place where families can rebuild together with dignity, support, and hope.
This is our next chapter of service.
We emphasize Christ-centered living, family unity, and practical skills to rebuild strong foundations. Veterans and families don’t just receive shelter—they gain tools for long-term healing and independence.
A Call to Patriots and the Community
Appearing on Patriots in Action wasn’t just an opportunity—it was a natural alignment of values.
Their commitment to action, accountability, and restoring the foundations of liberty reflects exactly how we approach veteran care at Set Apart Farms. We believe patriotism is more than words or symbols—it’s lived out through service, sacrifice, and stepping up when others are in need.
Caring for our nation’s veterans and their families is not optional. It is a responsibility.
Every day, men and women who once stood on the front lines find themselves fighting new battles at home—navigating medical recovery, facing housing instability, and trying to rebuild their lives after service. Too often, they do so without the support they deserve. At Set Apart Farms, we are committed to making sure no veteran family falls through the cracks.
But this mission is bigger than us.
It requires a community of people willing to stand in the gap—people who believe that real change happens through collective action and unwavering support.
Here’s how you can be part of that mission:
Watch our episode on Patriots in Action and share it with your family, friends, and networks. Awareness is the first step toward impact.
